UBC Life Sciences Centre

UBC Properties Trust
Vancouver, British Columbia
This five story, 550,000 sq. ft. complex is the largest building at the University of British Columbia, and the largest post-secondary research facility in British Columbia. The facility is now home to the UBC medical school, anatomy teaching labs, Centre for Disease Modeling, and the Centre for Blood Research.

Due to its many sustainability features, the UBC Life Sciences Centre is one of the greenest buildings in British Columbia. Ledcor was able to recoup or recycle 80 percent (2.8 million pounds) of waste materials that were produced during construction. As well, an erosion and sedimentation plan was implemented to minimize environmental damage during construction.

In comparison to buildings of similar size, the building emits 1,000 tons fewer green-house gases, consumes 28 percent less energy, and 50 percent less water. At the time of completion, the Life Sciences Centre was the largest LEED Gold certified building in British Columbia.
